Paul F. Levy,
President and Chief Executive Officer, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA

Joe Mitlyng is a very capable individual who develops effective working relationships with everyone he works with. When I first met him, he was nine months into the changes in leadership, governance, and physician compensation that resulted in a “Private Practice with Supportive Infrastructure.” These are difficult changes in any organization, but under his leadership, these changes were accomplished with respect for and by the individuals involved. Individuals who were most opposed to the changes found the changes reasonable. As one such individual told me, “Joe had a difficult job to do and he did it well.”

Joe worked with us as a consultant – with the title of Interim President and CEO. I am impressed that in his time working with us, we did not think of him as a consultant -- he became “one of us.” When the time came to transition to permanent leadership, the bottom line operating loss had been reduced by over $10 million, and the physician group had a business model that worked: effective leadership and governance, strong billing and collections, and productive physicians that understood and appreciated the new model. Joe assisted with the transition to a new President and CEO. The physician group’s performance since he left is testimony to what was accomplished under his leadership. The operating support required has continued to drop as projected. The group has begun providing services to independent practices affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

James L. Reinertsen, M.D.
President, The Reinertsen Group; Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; formerly Chief Executive Officer, CareGroup and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA

Joe Mitlyng proved extraordinarily valuable to the turnaround work of CareGroup and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Because he truly understood the in-the-trenches issues about how physician practices work, and also appreciated the strategic issues facing hospital and system leaders, he was able to build trust across organizational boundaries, develop a more sensible structural relationship between the hospital and physician practices, and dramatically improve how the physician practices worked day to day. The result was a $10 million improvement to the operating margin, and a fundamentally restructured, considerably healthier set of strategic relationships between physician and hospital organizations.

Gary Eiler
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics; formerly Senior Vice President of Finance, Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village, Illinois

When I asked Joe Mitlyng to assist me in the development of a newly formed hospital based physician practice group, he hit the ground running. As I look back at his work, I continue to be impressed how quickly he gained the confidence of a disparate group of physicians and developed a consensus on a new leadership model, changes in physician compensation formulas, and the appropriate complement of physicians at various locations. His breadth of experience in a wide range of areas – including individual physician relationships, complex reimbursement and tax rules and the dynamics of a group practice was applied quickly with maturity and professionalism. He received little resistance from group members and accomplished a great deal. I would highly recommend him as someone who is a highly experienced expert in his field and a great pleasure to work with.
